Be Good to Your Brain
Parkinson’s disease—a progressive disorder of the central nervous system caused by the brain’s inability to produce adequate levels of dopamine—is more common among those under 40 than ever before. We asked David Perlmutter, MD, FACN, author of The Better Brain Book (Riverhead, 2004), what he thought might be the cause.

“Clearly the incidence is rising, no doubt in part because of environmental factors. Even the most well-respected medical literature has clearly demonstrated a strong correlation between the risk of Parkinson’s disease and exposure to common toxins like pesticides. “

Also, quite a few pharmaceuticals, from blood pressure pills to medications to treat diabetes, raise homocysteine levels. This brain-damaging amino acid has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Blood pressure regulators and other medications, like statin drugs, the antidepressant Elavil, and the antidiabetic drug Glucatrol, compromise the body’s ability to produce coenzyme Q10, a critically important brain protecting antioxidant. We need to make people aware of this potential so they can make more appropriate choices about which medications to take and how to offset the risk of elevated homocysteine levels or a drop in CoQ10.”
Perlmutter’s prescription? He believes we can prevent degenerative diseases of the brain like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s by using the fundamentals of preventive medicine: exercise, stress reduction, dietary modifications, and nutritional supplementation, especially antioxidants such as glutathione and the vitamins A and E, both of which reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s dramatically. Perlmutter has demonstrated success with patients who already have Parkinson’s by administering glutathione intravenously. More than 800 doctors throughout the US use this procedure.
