WORKSHOP Friday, May 26, 1:30-4:45
Federal and Foundation Research Support for CAM and
Integrative Medicine
Speaker: Richard Nahin, PhD
There is often suboptimal communication between
the Federal and private funders of biological research, the mainstream
scientific community, and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)
practitioners concerning the priorities and processes for supporting
research on CAM and integrative medicine. A forum for interaction is
essential for fostering productive collaboration among the various groups.
The goal of this workshop is to promote the
exchange of information and ideas between Federal Officials of the U.S.
and Canadian governments, private foundations, scientists, and CAM practitioners.
Specifically, senior scientific staff from the U.S. National Institutes
of Health (NIH), the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), Health
Canada, and private foundations will host a series of didactic presentations
followed by concurrent breakout groups. They will address the areas
of basic science, clinical research, training and career development,
international collaborations, and health disparities as pertaining to
their organizations funding priorities and strategic plans, their grant
application process, and post award management of grants and contracts.
This dialogue will help to identify resources for supporting research
on CAM and integrative medicine, and steps to obtaining these resources.
It is expected that attendance at this workshop will enhance the ability
of mainstream scientists and CAM practitioners to obtain federal and
foundation support for their research topics on CAM and integrative
medicine.
