Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Cardiology
Practice: Are We Integrating?
Speakers: Michael Orlov, MD, PhD, Brian Olshansky, MD,

The field of Cardiology was traditionally distant
from Complimentary and Integrative Medicine (CIM). Invasive procedures
and potent drugs became the mainstay treatment and "aggressive"
patient management is considered to be the goal by many cardiologists.
However, certain conditions cannot be cured by a catheter procedure,
implantable device or a potent medication. Physicians begin to understand
that less "aggressive" measures, mind-body interaction, nutrition
and other natural forces play an important role in cardio-vascular health
and cardio-vascular healing. CIM has been gaining momentum in the field
of traditional Cardiology.
This session will familiarize the audience with
the current status of CIM in Cardiology. Several themes such as mind-body
relationship, stress and stress reducing techniques, placebo effects,
nutrition and supplements, effects of magnetism and new healing techniques
after cardiac surgery will be discussed with relevance to clinical practice.
Existing clinical trials will be summarized and presented along with
less confirmed data. Future directions for clinical trials in these
areas will be presented and discussed with the audience. Further integration
of CIM into Cardiology practice is awaiting ACC/AHA that are coming
out soon.
